It is one of the oldest football clubs in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Although it is a German club, the club has a traditional French style. It has been playing in the Bundesliga since 1984.

The club was founded in 1904 as a gymnastics club by Carl Flesch. Some of the players were interested in football, and they formed a football department with the parent sports club SC Freiburg on June 19, 1905. In March 1919 the department became an independent entity and was officially recognized as Football Club Freiburg V. The team played for the first time in 1919–20 in the first league of Baden and finished their first season in fourth place.
